General questions

iOS 4 and distorted/rotated contact images (07/04/2010)
I filed a bug report (22/06/2010) for Apple and after some further inquiry they accepted it as a bug in iOS 4. Version 2.2.2 of HappyDayz! provides a quick fix/workaround implementation until Apple fixed it.

If you still have distrored/rotated contact images after updating to the latest version of HappyDayz!. Please open the settings of HappyDayz! and disable the display of the contact images, go back to the contacts table and reactivate the display of the contact images afterwards. This forces a reload of the contact images.

If that is to confusing/complicated: Delete HappyDayz! and re-download it from the App Store.

iOS 4 and your selected detail of the contact images (07/04/2010)
I filed a bug report (22/06/2010) for Apple and after some further inquiry they accepted it as a bug in iOS 4. There is no workaround to display just your selected detail of the contact images. This must be done by Apple with a update of iOS 4. Sorry!

(07/21/2010) MobileMe: Due to some tests i removed my MobileMe account from my iPhone and re-added it. Since then the selected details of the contact images are shown correctly. Can anyone verify this with an Exchange account?

Where can i find the settings of HappyDayz! ?
Since Version 2.2
The settings are no longer in the Settings-App. You will find them now in HappyDayz! Just click on the small „i“ on the top right side.

Version 2.1 or lower
The Apple interface guidelines advises to add the settings of third party Apps to the iPhone “Settings”-App. This is the reason why you will find the HappyDayz! settings there. Start the “Settings”-App on your iPhone or iPod touch and scroll down until you'll see the HappyDayz! icon.

I deleted HappyDayz!. Do i have to pay again?
No ... to test it, i bought a App from the App Store and deleted it immediately without having a backup. Now i bought it again and my iPhone tolds me that i already bought the App and if i would like to download it for free! The procedure is a little bit confusing.

Where can i add birthdays?
It uses/reads the birthdays from the build in address book App called "Contacts".

Steps to add a birthday:
1. open the "Contacts" App on your iPhone or iPod touch
2. add (click on the plus sign) or edit a existing contact
3. scroll down and click "Add Field"
4. choose "Birthday" from the fields list
5. enter the birthday
6. do no forget to click "Save"
=> Start HappyDayz!

Additionally you can add birthdays in MobileMe, the Contacts App on your Mac, Outlook/Exchange on Windows, Yahoo, etc. and sync those data with your device.

How to add a anniversary?
It uses/reads the anniversaries from the build in address book App called "Contacts".

Steps to add a anniversary:
1. open the "Contacts" App on your iPhone or iPod touch
2. add (click on the plus sign) or edit a existing contact
3. scroll down and click "Add Field"
4. choose "Date" from the fields list
5. in the second line be sure that "anniversary" is selected and enter the date in the first line
6. do no forget to click "Save"
=> Start HappyDayz!

The anniversaries are not in the list. What’s wrong?
The processing of anniversaries is disabled by default. Go to the HappyDayz! settings and enable them. You will find the "Anniversaries" option in the settings group „Select dates".

Can you synchronize the birthdays with the calendar?
We (iPhone developers) have full access to the contacts but we cannot access the calendar to create, read, update or delete events. This is not allowed by Apple!

Can i add my kids without creating new contact entries?
Why don't you create a additional entry for the children in the Contacts-App? The small children grow, getting a mobile phone, a Mail address etc. ... add them to your address book and in a few years you are happy that you have done it.

I prefer that way (also due to the images), but you can add dates with custom labels (for example the name of the children) to a existing contacts entry. This can be read from HappyDayz! if it is enabled in the HappyDayz! Settings.

Steps to add a date with a custom label:
1. open the "Contacts" App on your iPhone or iPod touch
2. add (click on the plus sign) or edit a existing contact
3. scroll down and click "Add Field"
4. choose "Date" from the fields list
5. enter the date in the first line, click on the second line (anniversary) and add a custom label with the name of the children
6. do no forget to click "Save"
=> Start HappyDayz!

Enable the processing of dates with custom labels in HappyDayz!. You will find the „Other dates“ option in the settings group „Select dates".

My dates with custom labels are not in the list. What’s wrong?
The processing of dates with custom labels is disabled by default. Go to the HappyDayz! settings and enable them. You will find the „Other dates“ option in the settings group „Select dates".

When comes the feature to edit contacts in the App! itself?
In August/September 2008 I have thought a lot about that feature (due to reviews in the U.S. App Store) and came to decision not to implement it.

I would like to keep HappyDayz! as simple as possible. It should not replace the Contacts App. I think it is no problem to switch to the Contacts App to add a new contact. That's the way how a iPhone and iPod touch app should work. Ask Apple!

The Mail App also accesses the eMail addresses from the Contacts App and you cannot add new contacts there. Not every app which uses the data from the Contacts App should provide it's features.

I also tried some birthdays apps with that feature from my competitors and i was quite confused what happens if i delete a contact from those apps. Are they just removed from the birthdays app or from my contacts?

I'll keep the little space on the iPhone screen reserved for the next features, like managing gift ideas. I think such features are more useful than wasting screen space and my time in duplicating the requested feature.

Keep things simple. The iPhone and iPod touch are no desktop computers!

I must enter the year of a birthday which I do not know. What can I do?
The year field is in fact a mandatory field, therefore must be entered. In the settings of HappyDayz! you will find the option "Unknown year". This is set by default to "1900". There you can specify a year, which you can use when you do not know the year of birth. The rest is done by HappyDayz! : Does not compute the age, ...

Example:
Pamela does not betray the year of her birth. But you know that her birthday is at 15th May. Now you can enter 1900-05-15 as the date of birth. Replace the "1900" by the year you have set in the HappyDayz!-settings.

Why are all my contacts displayed twice in HappyDayz!
Because you have duplicate entries in your "Contacts"-App. You'll see the duplicates when you open the "Contacts"-App on your iPhone or iPod touch and choose the group "All Contacts". You can also use Spotlight and search for one of your contacts to see the duplicates.

That is a problem with your iTunes and iPhone synchronization. Please read the article at Mac OS X Hints or use Google to find more informations about it and how to fix it.

What is the intention of the number on the App icon and how can i remove it?
It shows the number of birthdays today and is set by a Push Notification (see below). The next day at 0:00 o'clock it gets automatically updated by another Push Notification.

To reset it manually: Start HappyDayz and shake your iPhone or iPod touch. As confirmation, you will hear a short sound.

Push Notifications

What are Push Notifications and how do they work?
They are explained in more detail on the Notifications page.

I did not received a Push Notification, what’s wrong?
First check and notice the following:
  • Make sure that you have enabled the Notifications in general and HappyDayz! in your device Settings-App.
  • Make sure that you can browse the internet and your internet connection is stable.  Push relies on your internet connection.
  • Turn OFF WiFi.  While on the cell network, test other push apps to see if you can receive push notifications.
  • If the device is connected over Wi-Fi and is still unable to receive notifications, the Wi-Fi network you're using might have a firewall that is blocking port 5223. This port must be open to TCP traffic for notifications to work.
  • What notification time is set in the HappyDayz! settings? Did you synchronized before or after that time? When you synchronized afterwards, your current data is considered for the notification run on the next day! Not for today, because the notification run was already done for today.
  • You will receive the notifications only once a day to your local notification time. The different timezones are handled correctly.
  • Remember, that the HappyDayz! server needs your latest data to send the correct Push Notifications. Do not forget to synchronize your data when you have changed some of the HappyDayz! notification settings.
  • Is your device jailbroken/hacktivated? If yes, there are known problems related to the Push Notifications. Please use Google to find the latest informations!
  • You are using a iPod touch? When the iPod touch screen is on and has a Wi-Fi connection, push notifications are received at any time. If the iPod touch screen is asleep, it will check every 15 minutes for a notification.
If you think you have done everything right and you still do not receive the Push Notification, then send me a mail from within HappyDayz! I’ll append a UDID number to that mail which identifies you. Only with this UDID number i can check your synchronized data.

What data is synchronized with your server for using the Push Notifications?
The dates are synchronized without the corresponding data like names, addresses, etc. to keep the privacy of your contacts! Your name is also not synchronized!

Why don’t you display the name in the Push Notification alert window?
Due to data privacy only the dates of the contacts gets synchronized. Not your name nor the names of your contacts. Showing the names and the other contact data is the job of HappyDayz!. Just start it when you received the Push Notification.

When i try to synchronize I always get the error "Failed to receive the required device token from the Apple servers. Please try again later!". What's wrong?
This error message occurs "only" on unlocked/hacktivated iPhones and has nothing to do with HappyDayz!. There is some code from Apple which requests a Device Token from their servers when starting a App with Push Notification support like HappyDayz!. The Device Token is necessary to send the Push Notifications to your iPhone.

As i know, the only way to get the Push Notifications running is to activate your iPhone with a legit, active AT&T sim (or whatever carrier your iPhone is originally locked to). You can find more informations about that topic on this websites: limitededitioniphone.com / thebigboss.org
